The
2002 Music & Dialogue Series
Oneness
in conjunction with Barnes & Noble Booksellers and
GRAMMY Fest hosted a music and dialogue series where we
gathered on four different evenings in early February
at a participating Barnes & Noble location in the
Los Angeles area to hear featured music and discuss issues
of race relations. The series highlighted the book “Wishes
in Black & White” by Eileen Williams Sabry and
musical guest artists: Benny Cassette, Tara Ellis, Joy
Enriquez with JB Eckl and Shango Dely, and KC Porter and
Howard McCrary. On each night we opened with music, followed
by quotes from the book and ended with audience feedback
and input on the open meeting.

The
2002 Songwriters’ Summit:
Oneness,
in conjunction with The Recording Academy’s - GRAMMY
Fest, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Remo Drums, Universal
Music, BMI, Jim Henson Studios, SST, Soundabout Music,
and Mackie produced an event to foster racial unity and
social justice. Oneness
brought together many of the industry’s top artists
and writers for a day of writing music of racial healing
and social justice. The day began at Jim Henson Studio’s
(the historic site where “We are the World”
was recorded) with a drumming circle sponsored by Remo
Drums, followed by a keynote address by Dr. Joy DeGruy-Leary
to provide songwriters’ who had never worked together
before a theme for their day of writing. Then it was off
to 17 different rooms to write songs. There were 17 songs
that were written that day, each having a theme of racial
justice and healing, coming together as one. The event
then culminated one week later with a musical showcase
at LA’s Conga Room featuring the songs that were
written that day and special guests Darius Rucker from
Hootie and the Blowfish, Brian Culbertson and Jonathan
Butler.

Celebrating
Cesar Chavez:
Oneness
partnered with the University of California Los Angeles
(UCLA) on a grant from the Governors Office for the State
of California’s GoServ
program to work with Los Angeles Public school students.
From March through June, Oneness
worked with Strathern Street Elementary School, Wonderland
Elementary School, Brockton Elementary School, Parkman
Middle School, Taft High School, Parkman High School and
University High School in an after school program to create
a performance piece based on the values embodied by Mr.
Chavez. Students performed brilliantly - acting, singing
and dancing in a celebration of Cesar Chavez. Students
learned about Mr. Chavez’s life-values reflecting
Service to others, Sacrifice,
A preference to help the most needy, Determination, Non-Violence,
Acceptance, Respect for life and environment, Community,
Knowledge and Innovation. Noted and esteemed
actor Ed Begley Jr. ( a personal friend of Mr. Chavez’s
writer of a play honoring Cesar) was a guest participant.
Our culminating event featured each of the schools in
a pubic performance that highlighted a section of Mr.
Begley’s play on Cesar Chavez. The overall performance
that Mr. Begley’s play was part of (“I am
Cesar”) was written and directed by up and coming
playwright/actor/singer Andrew Snook.
