WHAT
IS RACISM?
The word “Racism”
is often used to describe an individual’s actions that are
decisively discriminatory and/or rooted in racial superiority
and prejudice.
In order to clarify our work, and to avoid the confusion that
exists around the definition of racism, Oneness
defines racism as “established behaviors and beliefs that
are rooted in an ‘ideology of superiority’ where one
race or group is believed to be superior in character, appearance,
ability or value to another.”
This definition speaks to the reality that “racism”
is not simply race prejudice, but a deeply ingrained system of
discrimination and oppression that can only be eradicated by replacing
it with a contradicting ideology.
Oneness
actively works to contradict racism in all its obvious and subtle
forms, and seeks to replace the ideology of superiority with the
truth that humanity is one.
There is a clear and immediate need to replace racism
with race unity in our society. Many
believe that we no longer have issues surrounding racism in America
but the facts suggest otherwise as evidenced by:
 |
The
proliferation of supremacist organizations espousing racist
doctrines that target the young with bigotry-laced music. |
 |
Statistics
which show that test scores for minorities rank below national
averages |
 |
Census
figures which reveal that the by the year 2020, the aggregate
population of African Americans, Hispanics and Asians living
in America will be the majority. What kind of society will
America be if racial division and inequality still prevail
when the minorities of today become the majorities of tomorrow?
The founders of Oneness
believe that by fostering programs that educate society
about the value of our cultural diversity, we ALL benefit
via safer communities, a more productive workforce and a
shared sense of responsibility in making America the best
country it can be. |
